Eye Exam in Cedar Park

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

Your eyes are essential for living well. That’s why regular vision and eye health examinations are a significant part of preventive health care. Many people neglect to visit their eye doctor for periodic check-ups, waiting instead until they notice a problem before calling to make an appointment.

However, what many people do not realize is that a number of eye diseases and vision conditions do not present symptoms during their early stages. It is only when these problems, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts, advance to a later stage that symptoms may become bothersome. Unfortunately, that is also when vision damage has already occurred and treatment is less successful.

In contrast, an early diagnosis of eye disease allows Dr. Soltys, our eye doctor in Cedar Park, to treat your condition as early as possible, before there is irreversible damage to your vision. Be sure to book annual eye exams for children too!

What will happen during my Cedar Park eye exam?

Our eye doctor treats every patient as an individual. Therefore, the particular tests and procedures that we will use during your eye exam depend largely upon your health condition, age, symptoms, and your eye doctor’s professional judgement. In general, your eye exam may include the following steps:

  1. Case history: we will ask you to share details about your past and present medical issues, eye history, and family medical history
  2. Lifestyle needs: we want to know your visual requirements for work, home, school, and hobbies. Do you spend significant time in front of a computer, outdoors on a sports field, in a classroom…?
  3. Visual acuity: we will test how well you see out of each eye (distance and near vision), both separately and together. You will be asked to read a basic eye chart of letters and numbers.
  4. Refraction: our optometrist will measure the precise focusing power of each eye to determine your current vision prescription. We will administer objective testing and subjective techniques that require you to provide feedback on what you see.
  5. Binocularity: this evaluates your ability to use both eyes together for sight; eye teaming affects depth perception, eye coordination and mobility
  6. Colour vision: we’ll assess your ability to discern colours
  7. Eye health: our eye doctor in Cedar Park will use high-powered magnification, such as a slit lamp (biomicroscope) and ophthalmoscope to inspect your inner eye tissues and optic nerve. When necessary, dilating eye drops may first be applied to provide a better view of the back of your eye.
  8. Glaucoma screening: we will use a tonometer (puff test or blue light) to measure intraocular pressure. Your eye doctor will also look closely at the optic nerve and retina, as well as check peripheral vision.
  9. Additional testing: depending upon the results of the previous procedures, we may conduct additional tests to detect or rule out problems. This includes digital retinal imaging, corneal pachymetry to measure corneal thickness, OCT scans to analyze your ocular structure, and automated visual field testing.

What will happen after my eye exam?

Open communication between patient and eye doctor is the foundation of our excellent eye care. Dr. Soltys will meet with you to discuss all of the findings, and together we will figure out the most appropriate treatment plan, if needed. This may include eyeglasses, contact lenses, vision therapy and a program of eye exercises, or surgery. If you are diagnosed with an eye disease, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts, we will recommend the best medical treatment.
